VENTILATION AND AEROSOLS – MADE SIMPLE.

SARS-COV-2 is mainly transmitted by inhaling ‘liquid droplets’ containing the virus (emitted as a result of breathing, coughing, talking, sneezing and so on).

A mixture of these liquid droplets in air particles is called aerosol. These tiny aerosols can float in indoor air and they can also contain the corona virus.

We know by now that a well-functioning, mechanical ventilation system can reduce the risk of an infection by diluting indoor air with fresh air.

How do aerosols spread out in rooms and what kind of ventilation is the most effective? Below graphics simply show this.

  • Large particles fall down or can be intercepted by mouth and nose protection.

  • Smaller particles remain in the air for longer periods and pass through mouth and nose protection.

  • Airborne particles move via body heat, movement, airflow, etc.

  • Airborne particles change their properties through evaporation, loads, etc.

  • Aerosols can very quickly spread through a room.

  • One infectious person is enough to rise the viral load in the room continuously.

  • The risk of infection increases.

WHY IS OPENING THE WINDOWS NOT ENOUGH?

  • Without wind and with only small temperature differences between indoor air and outdoor air, air exchange in a room is only a minimal.

  • Effective ventilation is not guaranteed all-year-round.

  • The room climate cannot be adjusted.

  • Many rooms do not have enough windows for a sufficient room air change.

WHY DOES AIR CONDITIONING MIGHT EVEN INCREASE THE RISK OF AN INFECTION?

  • Under certain circumstances, these systems can even help the virus to spread faster.

HOW CAN THE VIRUS LOAD BE REDUCED IN ROOMS WITHOUT SUFFICIENT VENTILATION?
