The Kaiser Wilhelm Museum is located in the heart of Krefeld and is a bold display of an eclectic pluralism of style. Built in 1897 as a monument to the Kaiser and as a museum of applied arts, the building underwent a complete renovation from 2012 to 2017. Prior to the work, the Institute for Building and Solar Technology at the Technical University Braunschweig carried out elaborate simulations to look into the possibility of setting up an air conditioning system in the old building.

The result was a combination of a centralised and decentralised air conditioning system encompassing the exhibition spaces and the storage facilities. The decentralised air conditioning system consists of FSL-B-ZUS systems from TROX. The under sill units enable the provision of supply air and the addition of secondary air. The units are ready-to-operate, decentralised ventilation units that provide comfortable room heating and demand-based ventilation. They create an inducing displacement flow and use pumped hot water and pumped chilled water for heating and cooling.

The museum's air conditioning system is supplemented with floor heating that can also be used for cooling in the summer. These interlocking components ensure a consistent climate in the building. Today the building fulfils international museum standards for room temperature and humidity.
